Max People are currently seeking Herd Managers . We have multiple clients in the Mid, South, and North Canterbury regions, as well as the Southland and Otago region. Our clients have varying herd sizes ranging from 600 to 1800, with flexible rosters and accommodation options available.

As a Herd Manager, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the herd. Your main focus will be on nutrition, animal health, and welfare, while ensuring attention to detail in all aspects of the operation to maximise productivity.

To be successful in this role, you should have a minimum of 2 years of previous dairying experience and possess the necessary skills in herd management, including milking, calving, mating, and pasture rotations.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Milk harvesting, ensuring milk quality, and maintaining shed hygiene
  • Stock management, including identifying animal health issues and maintaining accurate records
  • Feed management, responsible for pasture allocation and assisting with feed budgeting for the herd
  • Assisting with reproductive management
  • Operating tractors for feeding out, baling, mowing, and silage
  • Conducting machinery and property maintenance
  • Recording and reporting farm and herd information
  • Supporting personal and team development
  • Identifying weed and pasture species
  • General farm duties


Salary for this position is between $65,000 - $70,000, including an accommodation allowance. This role presents an excellent opportunity for someone looking to advance from a Farm Assistant position.

Applicants must be passionate about the Dairy Industry and demonstrate a strong work ethic. The ability to work well in a team, lead when required, and adhere to farm and health and safety policies is essential.

Role requirements include passing a drug test, holding a current license, and having reliable transportation.
