Mid Canterbury dairy farm seeking an experienced Herd Manager to help lead day-to-day operations on a modern 700-cow operation with strong systems and a supportive ownership team.

Full Job Description

Located in Ashburton, Mid Canterbury, this is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Herd Manager to join a well-run dairy farm with modern systems, quality infrastructure, and supportive owners who are actively involved in the operation.The farm milks 700 cows across 164 hectares through a 40-aside herringbone shed fitted with Protrack and in-shed feeding, with Allflex collars used for herd monitoring and management. Irrigation is managed through pivots and corner sprinklers, creating an efficient and well-maintained farming system.This role suits someone confident taking responsibility for daily herd management, animal health, and supporting the wider farm team while working closely alongside the owners.

Details:

  • Start Date: 1st June 2026
  • Permanent, full-time role
  • Roster: 8 days on / 2 off, 8 days on / 3 off
  • Accommodation: Two-bedroom home with double garage
  • Location: Lauriston, Mid Canterbury
  • Package negotiable based on experience

Tasks:

  • Daily milking operations in a 40-aside herringbone shed
  • Supporting herd health, mating, and animal performance
  • Using Protrack and Allflex systems for herd management
  • Feeding out and assisting with pasture management
  • Irrigation monitoring across pivots and corner sprinklers
  • Tractor work and general farm maintenance as required
  • Supporting and leading junior staff where needed
  • Maintaining accurate farm records and following H&S procedures

Requirements:

  • Previous dairy farming experience is essential
  • Confident managing day-to-day herd operations
  • Good stock sense and pasture knowledge
  • Experience with Protrack, Allflex, or similar systems advantageous
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Full driver licence preferred
  • Legal right to work in New Zealand (AEWV not available)
