Dairy Assistant | Modern 1,400-Cow Operation

‍This professional Ashburton operation offers the chance to work with a large-scale Kiwi-cross herd, modern technology and well-established farming systems.

The farm milks approximately 1,420 cows through an 80-bale rotary shed, with ACRs, Protrack, and in-shed feeding. The operation uses technology extensively to support herd management, animal welfare and efficient day-to-day farming.

The Kiwi-cross herd is fitted with Allflex collars, providing continuous monitoring of cow movement and rumination. Automatic drafting of cows on heat allows the experienced team greater flexibility while supporting improved animal welfare and herd management.

In-shed feeding includes grain, minerals and molasses through an individual feeding module, while effluent is applied through the main pivot irrigation system using injection.

This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys large-scale dairy farming and wants to gain experience with modern herd monitoring, irrigation, feeding and professional farm systems.

• Herd size: Approximately 1,420 cows
• Wage: $27 per hour
• Accommodation allowance: $200 per week
• Accommodation has been upgraded in recent years and meet NZ Healthy Homes Standards

What You Will Be Doing:‍

• Milking and daily shed operations
• Animal health and herd management
• Monitoring herd activity and welfare
• Feeding and general dairy farm duties
• Irrigation and effluent management
• Operating farm vehicles and equipment
• General farm maintenance
• Supporting the wider team with seasonal and day-to-day farm work
• Maintaining high standards of animal care, cleanliness and safety

What We Require:‍

• Previous dairy farming experience preferred
• Milking experience essential
• Good stock sense and animal handling skills
• Reliable and hardworking approach
• Comfortable working in a large-scale dairy operation
• Willingness to learn and work with modern farm technology
• Good communication and teamwork skills
• Ability to work safely around livestock, machinery and irrigation systems
