Toolbox Talk - Checking in

Over the last few weeks we have been asked to make some fairly major changes to our lives. This has affected how we work, how we relate, and what we can or can’t do.

Worried?

It's been a wild ride so far......mind you we are not quite there yet. As we edge closer to life as it was in the before times, we still need to maintain our physical distancing and washing our hands.

Over the last few weeks we have been asked to make some fairly major changes to our lives. This has affected how we work, how we relate, and what we can or can’t do.

As we move through this situation, take a moment to check in with yourself. How has this affected you? Has it made any difference? Are you worried, stressed and over it?

You may be thinking about.....

Catching the virus?
How long before we go back to normal?
The home bubble or the work bubble?
Feeling isolated?
Missing the whanau/ pamilya/ famille/ vuvale/ family?
Will the economy survive?
Worried about the kids, Mum, Dad or the Grandparents?
Wondering why a chefs hat has 100 pleats?

We are but human, its natural to think about things that are affecting us. Checking in with yourself and addressing issues is important as we move forward.

How can I help myself?

  • Write down your worries - if a thought pops into your head, make a brief mental note of it. Tell yourself you’ll think about it later, that way you don't need to worry about it right now.
  • If the worry is solvable, start brainstorming - make a list of all the possible solutions you can think of. Try not to get too hung up on finding the perfect solution.
  • If the worry is not solvable, accept the uncertainty - we can't control what will happen  and dwelling on it wont make any difference to the outcome.
  • Get up and get moving - very effective way to release endorphins which relieves tension, stress, boosts energy, and enhances your sense of well-being.
  • Try deep breathing - when you worry, you become anxious and breathe faster, often leading to further anxiety. By taking in a few deep breaths you can calm your mind and quiet the negative thoughts.
  • Talk to someone - it may seem like a simple solution, but talking face to face with a trusted, non- judgmental friend or family member is one of the most effective ways to calm your nervous system and diffuse anxiety

If none of the above works then check out the Company updates for some awesome jokes in our previous blogs which will give you a wee giggle. Remember laughter is the best medicine.
