Toolbox Talk - Fatigue the silent killer

Stress, work, long hours and hot days, it all takes its toll. We need to look after ourselves and keep an eye on our mates

Feeling flat?

Construction work is a hard slog at times. The long hours, physical and mental challenges take their toll on us. Add in the heat of a long summer day and by the end of the week, we are feeling absolutely knackered.

If we don't look after ourselves we are heading towards a possible break down. The human body is a marvellous thing but it can only take so much stress before it starts to fail.

Ways to help yourself.

  • Don't burn the candle at both ends. Try for at least 7.5 to 9 hours of sleep a night.
  • Avoid naps. Try going to sleep and waking up at similar times each day
  • Turn the phone and computer off well before you head to bed
  • Avoid eating large meals right before sleep
  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat & drink the right stuff. Keep away from the pies
  • Take all scheduled work breaks. Eat a snack or exercise during the break, it will refresh you
  • Stay well hydrated, drink plenty of water or electrolytes throughout the day
  • Slip-on a shirt, slop on some sunscreen and slip on a hat
  • Talk to your doctor about your concerns

Keep an eye on your mates. If they look a bit jaded, keep yawning or falling asleep during breaks have a quiet word or tell the foreman.
